West Coast port employers and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have made progress in their labor talks, according to the White House press secretary. Acting US Labor Secretary Julie Su is encouraging the parties to come to a resolution. Business groups are calling for President Biden to appoint an independent mediator to finalise a contract since West Coast ports are critical to US supply chains. Dockworkers have been working without a contract since July 2022 and unions are pressing for a bigger share of record profits reaped when cargo shipments surged during the pandemic.
