Safran Helicopter Engines and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have established a joint venture to develop engines for India's indigenous rotorcraft. The joint venture will focus on engines for HAL's 13-ton twin-engine Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and the naval Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). This is India's first in-country rotorcraft engine design and manufacturing capability. The engine is expected to be based on the RTM322 turboshaft currently used in the NH90 helicopter. HAL foresees a need for around 200 IMRH rotorcraft for the Indian Air Force.
