From 12 to 15 September 2023, six cases of Nipah virus were reported in Kozhikode district, Kerala, India. Two of those cases resulted in death. The remaining cases were family and hospital contacts of the first case. No new cases have been reported since 15 September. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected animals or direct contact with an infected person. Measures have been taken to contain the outbreak, including contact tracing and enhanced surveillance. The virus found in Kerala is similar to the strain found in Bangladesh.
