India is increasing its use of inland waterways for the transportation of coal. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways aims to transport 41.06 million tonnes of coal through inland waterways in the current fiscal year. This shift is part of the government's efforts to promote multi-modal transportation and reduce logistical costs. Inland waterways offer advantages such as cost-effectiveness and enhanced connectivity between coal production and consumption centers. The ministry is also in discussions with various other ministries for the movement of coal, LPG, and foodgrains.
