India aims to have its first Polar Research Vessel (PRV) in the next five years to support its research base stations in Antarctica. The proposal for the ship is expected to go for Cabinet approval this year. The estimated cost of the vessel is Rs 2,600 crore, and the government is in talks with other countries for expertise. India currently has three research base stations in Antarctica and needs ice breaker ships for continuous access. A PRV can also serve as a research platform for scientists in the Southern Ocean.
