India's trucking market is expected to grow fourfold by 2050, according to a report by Niti Aayog and RMI. The trucking sector currently moves 70% of India's freight, but this is expected to increase to 9.6 trillion tonne-km by 2050. In response, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a mandate for all trucks to have air-conditioned cabins. This move is aimed at providing comfort and safety for drivers who currently face harsh conditions and long working hours. The cost of retrofitting trucks is estimated at around Rs 30,000, with increased fuel consumption as a potential drawback.
