Colombo-based conglomerate, Aitken Spence, is increasing its apparel business by sourcing from India. Its subsidiary, Aitken Spence Apparel, currently works with Reliance Industries (RIL) as a sourcing and tailoring partner for Gap. The company plans to expand into men's and women's wear categories for Gap, as well as other brands sold by Reliance. Aitken Spence is also exploring partnerships with apparel start-ups and private labels in India. The company's recent acquisition of a garment factory in Sri Lanka has increased production capacity. Sri Lanka's duty-free agreement with countries like Korea and China gives it a tax advantage over India, benefiting the Indian apparel industry.
