China has overtaken Greece as the largest shipowning nation by gross tons (gt) according to the latest World Fleet Register from Clarksons Research. However, Greece still leads in deadweight terms. China's fleet has a gross tonnage of 249.2 million gt compared to Greece's 249 million gt. The Chinese fleet is valued at $180 billion, higher than Greece's $163 billion. Greece still plays a significant role in global shipping, particularly in the tanker and LNG sectors, and holds a 15.8% share in ship ownership.
