The Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, Aleksey Chekunkov, has announced that the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in Russia's Arctic economic zone is experiencing a significant increase in development. Freight turnover through the corridor has risen eightfold since 2015, reaching 34 million tons per year in 2022. Chekunkov expects this figure to exceed 80 million tons by 2024. Chekunkov emphasized that the NSR is not just a response to Western sanctions but a global transportation corridor essential for transporting goods. Russia has already substituted most imported equipment with domestic alternatives and has received proposals from foreign partners, notably India, for shipbuilding projects.
